Top 8 Tips on self-care

As I have spent the last few weeks running around like a headless chicken prepping for the arrival of the baby, I forgot to take the time to take care of little old me. I know that I won’t get much time to do so after baby come for a few months until I am all settled. So I figured will take the time now for myself and enjoy it while it lasts. Spending time with my husband (who’s here for baby’s birth) is giving me the nudge to put it all aside and focus on us but mostly me. There is nothing wrong with a little selfish time to take care of your own needs, besides if you’re happy, then everyone else around you will be happy. You will radiate positive energy and that is always inspiring.

Here are my top tips on self-care and how you get to enjoy yourself and be all relaxed.

1) SKIN CARE

sephora-skin-care-products-1516204930

That is like my holy grail of self-care. I am not going to lie; I am a huge sucker when it comes to skincare. I like to splurge because I feel like if I am good in my own skin, then I am more confident and I feel like I can conquer the world. Good skin gives me the push to put myself out there. I know I struggled in that department quite a bit when I was younger, but I learned that when working with good products (pricey or not), you will achieve your goal to perfect skin. I am super indulgent when it comes to masks and I like to do it whenever I have time. Back when I was single, it was a daily ritual for me…but since getting married, I have slacked a bit, perhaps because I have less free time on my hands. However, I vowed to get back to it, because it makes me happy! So ladies, mask away! Trust me, you’ll feel better!

2) WATER

170802120652_1_900x600

This is pretty obvious but I tend to forget to hydrate and it just makes me feel sluggish, lethargic and causes me to have headaches. Well, headaches no more because I am getting back on track. I find it quite hard sometimes to replenish on the H2O but it is the essence of our existence. I sometimes go a full day not even drinking 1 cup of water and I realize it is bad for me…but I just don’t think of it. However, now, I have a refillable water bottle with me and I spend most of my day with it in my hands so that I remember to drink up and stay hydrated. It not only helps me with headache, but it also helps me with my skin. It’s much more hydrated and smooth; I don’t feel like a lizard anymore. Staying hydrated helps your body detox hence giving you more energy to be out and about doing your thing!

3) EXERCISE

Top-6-Ways-To-Stay-Fit-Without-Exercising-2-1

I have always been an active girl…since I was little and I am not about to let it go. However, since hitting the third trimester, feeling heavy and tired weren’t helping me in that department. The least I would do these days is take a walk and trying to get to 10 000 steps as a goal. Most day, not gonna lie, I don’t get to my goal, but at least I know I tried. I always loved to exercise as a means to detox my brain from bad thoughts and bad energy—yes it was also for my body, but mostly for my mental health. I was always a pretty angry child and stress was eating me up, so the only way I found to let that all go was through working out. I did everything anyone could possibly do, like zumba, pilates, yoga, dance, you name it!!! As long as I move, I am happy and I cannot wait to get back into working out, because I always feel much healthier and much happier. Work out ladies! Work out for your mental health!!!

4) READ

untitled

When I was little, I remember eating up books for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I loved loved loved reading! It was our things as a family when we were little…going to the library every weekend was a ritual and we all loved it so much. As the years went by, I slowly started losing that habit and it makes me quite sad that I let it go. Reading feeds your soul! It transports you to worlds undiscovered and it helps your imagination flow and your brain to be in working gear rather than being lazy. Taking the time to read before bed helps you relax and forget about the burdens you may carry. Taking the time to read a book daily is a challenge but a good one because you know you’re doing yourself some good. I am slowly getting back into it and I am enjoying it so far.

5) DO WHAT YOU LOVE

physed-happiness-articleLarge

I have always been an advocate about pushing people into doing what they love because I know what it feels like. That pure beautiful raw rush that you get when you do something you love is irreplaceable. We live only once and taking the time to do something you love, whatever it may be is fulfilling and satisfying. Living your dreams is not impossible, we just need to let go of our fears and our limitations. Impossible is nothing! I try as much as possible to have a little list of things I wish to do and cross it off slowly and man is it amazing to know that you can! Even if it seems silly to others, do it anyway. Like blogging, or vlogging or riding a bike even, whatever it may be, do it for you and only you and never listen to what others have to say. It is easy for others to judge you…or humans judging each other in general, but fuck it and live the moment and live your dreams because you never know when your time will come. Even though I am going to be a mom very soon, I will still have that list close to my heart and accomplish whatever I can because I know that the happier I am, the happier my little family will be.

6) MEDITATE

bigstock-Meditating-47886218-1024x683

Very much like exercising for many, meditating is food for your soul. For me, it is what gives me the power and the energy to keep the show going. Taking 30 minutes daily for yourself to pray, meditate or simply reflect on your life and your purpose should be enough to keep you happy. For me it’s praying and I find that when I take the time to pray, I feel less anxious, less stressed and less disoriented. I, like many other women around the world, tend to be very hard on myself and demand a lot more of myself than I can give and that is a sucky attitude to have. We women feel like we need to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders and we want to take care of it all and if we don’t, well we feel like failures. But let me tell you ladies, we do a lot more than men do (not being sexist—its’ just fact), but we still cannot accept it and still want to do more. This is why mediation is important because you take the time to reflect on your life and take the time to love yourself more, appreciate yourself more and respect yourself more.

7) EAT HEALTHY

Fruits And Vegetables

Not saying we can’t indulge and eat that greasy burger or eat those crispy fries, I am saying be balanced. Life is not about forbidding yourself from enjoying the bounties given to you; it’s about knowing when to indulge and when to restrain yourself. However, eating healthy keeps your body in check and keeps you active and happy. Eating healthy keeps you from feeling sluggish and tired and that should be your number one priority. Your body is your temple and taking care of it will keep you positive. Besides, eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring, it can be creative and exciting; you just have to learn a few tricks.

8) SLEEP

SG-Why-Sleep-Matters-722x406

Last but not least, sleep! Sleep people!!!! That is probably one thing I am struggling with lately and will struggle with for a little while longer. The less sleep I get, the more tired I feel, the grumpier I feel, and the less motivated I feel. Despite having less sleep, I still try to stay active…but some days I just want to be a couch potato. I suffered from insomnia for the longest time and was able to run on little to no sleep sometimes but lately I have been wanting to cocoon and sleeeepp. But man, I can’t help but feel guilty whenever I feel the need to nap because I feel like I could be more productive to the universe. However, it is good to sleep and when you feel like taking little naps, do so, because when you are rested, your body and mind are stronger and you have the power to do anything you want to do.

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, treat yourselves with love and dignity and don’t be afraid to tell yourselves that you’re doing great; it doesn’t mean you’re a show-off or a self-centred asshole, it just means you acknowledge that you are human and that you need a break. There is no harm in taking the time for yourselves and try to live without judgement and negativity. There’s only one life and you deserve to be happy, everyone deserves that!

I tried following the 10 step Korean skincare routine for a month and here’s what happened…

So as we all may know, Koreans take their skincare routine very seriously; so damn seriously that they have a whole 10 steps to follow. I already read about the benefits of their routines and their habits and the products they use. Some are pretty pricey and some are average and their skincare varies from creams to serums to ampoules to masks. After a month of trying this out, I gotta say it’s exhausting, but after some extensive research, I do realize that it is not required to do the full 10 steps on a daily, but rather to choose what to use according to the particular needs of your skin. Here are the deets…

Step One: Oil Cleanser

3197894

Purpose of this step: The oil cleanser is applied to dry skin; an oil cleanser to help remove makeup and any other oil-based product debris like sunscreen and pollution particles.

What I used: I recently got on the Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm bandwagon thanks to many obsessive review readings. There is no particular special texture or smell for this product, but it was soft and pleasant to use. It takes a little to get used to if you do not like the feel of oil on the skin; it was definitely weird for me to have an oily film on my skin but knowing that I could wash it right after didn’t make it too bad to bear. Every night, for a whole month, I first cleansed my face with this oil whether I had makeup or not.

Step Two: Foam Cleanser

shiseido-benefiance-extra-creamy-cleansing-foam-125-ml-1

Purpose of this step: According to Koreans, the secret to perfect skin is to make sure it is fully clean before applying any other product…therefore, double cleansing is necessary because there, for sure, will be leftover gunk on your skin after one cleanse.

What I used: I never paid any consideration to the cleanser I used as long as it never made my skin dry. So I grabbed whatever was on the shelf at the drugstore and to be honest, other than the Cosrx Cleanser which I still love, I didn’t give it too much thought, so I figured there’s no harm for me to try a foam cleanser. I decided to try the Shiseido Extra Cream Cleansing Foam and I actually loved the double-cleanse step. This rich cream foams instantly and helps clean the skin in the smoothest way leaving you with fresh and supple skin filled with health and just oomph. It really felt like my skin was completely cleared of any bad particles, leaving a clean slate to work with for the rest of the regimen. This is probably the two steps I will stick with forever because clean skin feels truly amazing.

Step Three: Exfoliator

424867-1001581720-1

Purpose of this step: It’s pretty obvious why we use exfoliators. I remember being quite obsessed with this step when I was younger, because it was the only way my skin felt super clean and fresh…and I may have been abusive with it to the point where I exfoliate almost daily which put a strain onto my sensitive skin. Too much of it can actually damage the skin rather than saving it. Granted, exfoliation not only cleans out clogged pores, but it also sloughs off dead skin cells as it removes the dull layer of cells to help reveal brighter skin.

What I used: I wanted something less abrasive because I already have quite dry skin now with the pregnancy. So I decided to stick to just using a glycolic acid exfoliator instead rather than bead filled cream. Although, when I do feel like my skin needs it, I do use a cream exfoliator once every two weeks in the shower for an extra boost. With the Pixi Glow Tonic, I could easily exfoliate away with a little cotton pad and be done in like  two seconds. Although I ended up not sticking to this step, it was still beneficial as glycolic acid is the Holy Grail for exfoliation because it helps effectively remove the outermost layer of dead cells from the complexion, revealing brighter, fresher skin. Glycolic Acid can also be used to treat scarring, skin discoloration and signs of aging.

Step Four: Toner

71kZkm5SEfL__SY355_

Purpose of this step: According to Korean skincare experts, after cleansing so many times the skin becomes fragile, so it is really important to take the time to hydrate it and this is why toner is necessary because it acts as a way to prep the skin, so it’ll absorb the following treatments better.

What I used: I stuck with just using the rose water I was using from the beginning of my pregnancy. You can pretty much find rose water in your local organic food store and not spend a gazillion dollars. Didn’t want to go all out and purchase something just to try it…I was content with the results of the rose water. I still used this step, on and off, depending on how I feel and depending on the time I have to spend to prep my skin. At the beginning, I used a cotton pad but then I felt like I was wasting so much product and wasn’t getting all the benefits…therefore, I decided to just pour the liquid into my palms and patting onto my skin and this felt much more beneficial. This step really did help my skin feel plumper and more hydrated.

Step Five: Essence

thumb-Cosrx_advancedsnail96musinpoweressence_405x405

Purpose of this step: The essence is the heart of Korean skin care and it considered the most important part of their entire routine. The essence is a treatment that is similar to serums, boosters, or ampoules; but it’s more watery in consistency then the rest of those products, so it comes out like a toner.

What I used: Since I have used Cosrx before as a brand and felt like it wouldn’t cause me to break out massively or have an allergic reaction, I decided to try on of their essences. I went with the Advanced Snail Power Essence but honestly, although I finished up the bottle, I didn’t feel like it made a world of a difference, I mean I don’t feel like I need to continue with this step. It did feel luxurious and diva-like to splash the essence on my face but it was just meh for me.

Step Six: Serum, Boosters, or Ampoule Treatments

0085191_vitamin-c-serum

Purpose of this step: This basically where you target your major needs and use these specific products to treat all the concerns you may have with your skin. This step is to work on issues that you may have such as brown spots, pigmentation, acne and more.

What I used: Since at the moment, I am having very good skin, I haven’t changed what I use. I have been using this particular serum for ages and will continue to do so because I really do actually see a difference in my skin whenever I stop using it. This Mario Badescu Vitamin C Serum is a must for me because it helps me maintain a healthy, glowing, clean skin all year round. It helps brighten my complexion and even out my skin tone. This serum step is a regular in my skincare routine anyway so I didn’t feel like I had to go all out. My skin really does feel healthy with this serum and I do recommend it to anyone looking to remove any spots and pigmentation.

Step Seven: Mask

0dcf59efe5aea846d8c0087c57af9a36

Purpose of this step: The purpose of your mask depends on what your skin needs. You can choose to extra hydrate, to deep-clean or whatever depending on how your skin is on this particular day. This is not an every-night step, you really only need to do it twice a week.

What I used: Masking has been a ritual for me for ages! I cannot not use a mask, you know what I mean? It’s like the only way I feel like I unwind and relax. I use masks usually to relax but whenever I feel like I need to clear up my clogged pores or deep clean my skin, I reach for the heavy duty masks. There are a couple of masks that I use and it would be too long to go through them in this post…but I can definitely do another updates posts with my favourite masks of all time. I usually just reach for the Sephora Brand Sheet Masks depending on how I feel and they work great. There is no need to spend big money on masks as long as they truly work and deliver what they promise.

Step Eight: Eye Cream

shiseido_anti-dark_circles_eye_cream_15ml

Purpose of this step: Depending on what you are looking for, this step could focus on everything from fine lines to dark circles. Basically, if you have any under eye concerns, “there’s” a cream for it.

What I used: I was never into eye creams to start with; I tried a gazillion cream from a gazillion different brand but never truly saw the benefit of any. According to my dermatologist, eye creams aren’t necessary anyway because they’re just like your regular moisturizer with a little less concentration in the ingredeints….so using your regular moisturizer around your eyes gently is way better than splurging your money of an eye cream that won’t do much anyway. I, for kicks, used to Shiseido Benefiance Wrinkle Night Cream and yup, as I predicted, nothing really changed. I mean it’s nice and bougie to use it, but I won’t keep spending 78$ for something that doesn’t work all that much.

Step Nine: Face Cream

dr_jart_cream_large

Purpose of this step: This step is simply to lock in skin’s moisture and it is the key to supple, younger-looking skin.

What I used: Even if you don’t end up following the 10 step skincare routine, moisturizer should be worn day and night. My current favourite is the Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream and I absolutely love it because it quenches my dehydrated skin so deeply. It freaking feels amazing on and I don’t feel greasy or icky after putting it on. Sucks that it’s always sold out at Sephora. It honestly does make a difference in the way my skin feels and since I have been using it, I haven’t felt a bit dry or irritated. I cannot stress how smooth my skin feels at the moment, like better than baby-butt smooth! I promise!

Step Ten: SPF

2504782

Purpose of this step: Koreans (Asians in general) are really really obsessed with SPF. It seems self-explanatory, but sun protection is crucial on a daily basis to maintain healthy skin. Applying SPF regularly, even when it’s cloudy, that’s the biggest differentiator in the Korean regimen.

What I used: I usually apply my SPF after my moisturizer every morning. I love physical sunscreen because they contain mineral ingredients like Zinc Oxide and so they protect from both UVA and UVB rays. The one I am currently using is the Shiseido Oil-Free SPF. I mean we all know why SPF is important and so it is really important to make it a big habit to use this on a daily even when it rains and really when the sun’s too hot and out there.

After spending a whole month working up on this routine, I am not going to lie that it did feel like a chore on some days and it was sometimes annoying for me to go through everything daily. Whenever I felt like I needed to unwind, I love it! I loved doing the whole circus, but being real here, 10 steps as a new mum will be quite hard for me to maintain and so I will probably end up keeping 5 to 7 of these steps for the future. Quite frankly, if you do have the time for the 10 steps skincare routine, then go for it, because the benefits are really there and I do see results, but life everything else in life, it’s work and you need to be dedicated.

Four things that cheered me up this month

Since I was feeling down since the beginning of the New Year and felt a bit out of the loop on living life cheerfully and lightly. I am usually a pretty cheerful and positive person but being physically sick ain’t that exciting and I feel like it affects my mental state very much. Since feeling much better physically, I have been on a journey of self-care and I make sure to stay jolly. Every month that passes, I focus on finding little things to keep my spirits high and my mood chappy. Here’s a little list of those things.

Praying (also meditating)

IMG_1173

Being a Muslim, I mean it is required for us to pray 5 times a week…but since moving to Jericho, I have become a little bit more negative than my usual self and i don’t like that side of me because that never was me! I am always the girl that lives in a “delusional” world, where everything is perfect no matter what happens and that when you fall, you can easily get up and move forward. Anyway, to break this ugly and disastrous self-sabotage cycle of loathing, I have turned to mediating and praying. I would do yoga whenever I can but praying has also helped me find inner peace. This isn’t to really push anything down anyone’s throat but I do feel more Zen nowadays. I never took to praying so deeply until passing through some hardship and now I know that it is there for a reason; it keeps us light-hearted and relaxed. I would describe it as doing yoga, really, it’s a 5 minute process that I do 5 times a day and it helps me re-energize and re-center. You sort of disconnected for your troubles and worries and just work on rebuilding your trust in God, in life and in the good things that come your ways.

Florence Welch (& the Machine)

florence-and-the-machine-music-videos

I have fallen back in love with her music. There’s so much to listen to these days, but I stumbled onto the Dog Days and just remembered how good it was. I listen to other music obviously, but this month I have had Florence and the Machine on repeat and it has been giving me life! I like to blast the music high when hubs isn’t home to dance around a little bit while making dinner. Music can easily and quickly lighten my mood. I don’t usually go for a favourite band (except maybe for Coldplay), but I like to listen to meaningful lyrics and that goes for any genre of music. This month in particular, music has been a good way to keep me active too. So it’s always a win with music.

RuPaul’s Drag Race

888

It was a while since I even opened the TV, even if I am home alone, I rarely open it. I don’t feel motivated to sit there and watch it all by myself. I get a little more excited watching with someone else…but going on to Netflix recently, I was curious as to what I could watch…something not too dark and not too serious. I stumbled onto RuPaul’s drag race and that’s where the love started. I binge watched by way up to season 7. It’s so freaking amazing! I am totes in love with this show. The first episode of each season is always my favourite because then you get to see the transformations of each contestant and their reactions to each other. I love how talented some of these queens are; I mean I wish I could do my eye shadow half as decent as they do. I also love how some of them are so talented in sewing and just make beautiful costumes out of nothing. So inspiring! Their will to succeed is touching and exciting to see.

Skincare/Makeup

IMG_1129

Although I don’t usually go ham with it but I love playing with it nowadays. I have mentioned it in my previous post, but skincare/makeup have been keeping me quite content these days. I now find the time to really cleanse my skin and exxfolitate properly and even get some masks done. A little R&R never hurts! Also, there’s something just so satisfying about adding a pop of color on a bland canvas (my face at the moment); seeing the little changes that happen is awesome. Sometimes, I take the time to put some makeup even if I’m at home, just for fun. Because why the hell not?!

The Foreo experience

img_3841

I’m not one to spend so much money on little gadgets and beauty tools…but my skin had a little bit of unwanted texture over the end of the summer and carried on like this till October. It was gross to the touch; almost felt like a sidewalk or something. I used to wash my face with the Olay Pro-X Microdermabrasion Plus Advanced Cleansing System for the longest time and I was quite satisfied with it. However, when I felt like my skin got drier and more sensitive, I knew that the bristles were irritation and stripping my skin for its natural oils. I stopped it for a while but I couldn’t get rid of the dead skin. I had seen and heard about the Luna device but never wanted to invest it because of the steep price (299$). I heard so many people rave about it and swear by it in their daily skincare routines. When I got notification of a 20% discount at the Sephora VIB Rouge sale, I though this is the chance to risk it and try it out. It’s now or never!

I wanted to try the product for a little while before I shared my opinion and thoughts with you guys. I have been using it for a little over 3 months now and it is safe to say that this little baby changed my life. Literally! It helped improve my skin texture, remove dirt gently, exfoliate lightly and improve circulation. I can honeslty attest that the Foreo Luna 2 changed the way I clean my skin! It’s super safe to use on sensitive, eczema-prone skin. ANDDD I use it morning and night! So far, my skin loves it.

A The Luna is made with a thick silicone material, which makes it easy to clean, easy to use and makes it gentle on the skin. It’s waterproof! So it’s totes safe to use freely under water…which I don’t usually do, but this is a good option to have. The device comes with 2 sides, the one with the little bristles and the one with the big waves. One side for cleaning and one side for massaging your products into your skin. I do not ever use that side, but that’s an option for those who want to get the full experience. This device pulsates and allows you to clean your skin everywhere on a timed frame…which means that you do not over-clean and strip your skin or hurt it.

Now, this device claims to help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and it helps obtain radiant, firm, youthful-looking skin. Now, I don’t know about the wrinkles and fine line, but I do know that I have radiant, healthier looking skin. What I like about it is the shape, I feel like its shape is perfect enough for you to get those little narrow ridges clean. Like around your nose or under your lips. It honestly feel like you’re getting a baby massage every time you clean your face. It gives you the right amount of clean with the right amount of fresh and plump. I feel like products skin better and absorb better with the help of this device.

I am super surprised that I would like this so much, but I really do! Plus I do not have to change batteries or charge it. I have been on the same charge for the past 3 months. This is always a plus for me!

If you’re looking into investing in the Luna device, I recommend it! Annnnd on top of it, there’s a little offer right now on the Sephora website, where you can get the Luna in a package with products for 199$. They have the sensitive skin one and the combination skin one.

It’s truly a good investment, especially that it gives you results. It’s totes a keeper!

Su:m 37 Secret Essence.

img_1861

I talked about Korean skincare in a previous post and how I also jumped on the k-beauty bandwagon to see what the hype was all about. So along with my other purchases, this was one I really looked forward to trying out because of how much hype it was getting.
It was compared to the SK-II facial treatment essence and I figured I could give it a go.
What is a treatment essence you say? Well, as an outsider looking in, I get overwhelmed because there are like a million steps in the k-beauty regimen. From eye serum, to lip serum, water essence, to leave in mask..and the list goes on. Asians are trained from a young age to take care of themselves and their skin in general as a preventative measure and I find that so inspiring and fascinating. That’s why most of the Asians I meet having amazing skin! To die for!
So, a treatment essence is the second moisturizing step in an Asian style routine after toning. They’re basically there to help your skin absorb moisture more to hydrate and plump it. When I first received the bottle, I was so impressed with the packaging, because I am a nerd like that! It feels luxurious in the hand. Unlike the SK-II essence, this one is a little more affordable and it is perfect to try it out as a “starter” to luxury brands.

img_1864
This Su:m37 essence is filled with yeasts, beneficial bacteria and a larger number of beneficial plant ferments and extracts (it has over 80 fermented plants and vegetables extracts). The smell is wonderful, it smells so soothing and pleasant. It smells floraly and earthy. I quite enjoy it, but can see how others may not. This is a watery toner/essence. The texture is very much that of water, but a smudge more viscous. It’s also clear, and slightly yellow in appearance. It feels the skin super moisturized and happy. I like to use it at night right before my serums. I pat it in and leave it to dry completely and skin in before I go to my next step and sometimes, I find that this is enough for me and I go to bed.
I have been using this since the beginning of the November and I can see a difference in my skin. It feels more hydrated and more glowing in the morning. I use this in conjunction with my Youth to the People moisture cream. I still have loads of product left, because a little goes a long way. It costs 75.50$ USD for 100ml. So will I repurchase this? I would. But not anytime soon, because I have a few more products I am curious about to try out.
Till next time x

K-beauty sheet masks

As you all know by now, I am a massive mask junkie. I love me a good detoxing/relaxing time with a good mask on. Whether it is a bubble bath or couch time with a good tea in my hand, I like to have a mask on because that’s how I feel super relaxed. I guess it’s a comfort thing. So, I went with my sissy 2 months ago to find a good burgundy lipstick at the mall and we were walking past The Face Shop. I was always intrigued by k-beauty and wanted to see what the hype was all about. So I plunged in there and got a few masks along with some face products.

I also started shopping a little online for some face products on www.jjcosmetics.com and on www.w2beauty.com.

I want to share with you my thoughts and honest opinion about theses masks. However, I wanted to use them for quite some time before I spoke about them on my blog. I have been using them since October and I’m a little meh about some of them.

img_1866

The Character masks were 5$ CAD each. But there was a promotion where you buy 4 and get 1 for free. I ended up getting 5. The cute part of these masks is the fact that they’re characters and they’re printed. So when you put them on, you get into character. It’s so Korean! It’s why I feel in love with them before using them even.I also got the Snail Bee High Content Mask Pack from Benton on the W2Beauty website. I bought the 10 pack one for 20$ USD. The packaging is not as cute as the other masks I purchased..but nonetheless I tried them and here are the verdicts:

Each mask has a different benefit; some were hydrating, some were moisturizing, some were brightening, etc..etc… Just like Sephora masks, these bad boys had something to offer. The hydrating ones were my favorite. For me, the character masks were much better in the sense that they offered me more hydration than the Benton one.

The character masks were more serum infused. When I got them out of the package…I still had loads of serum left in it, which meant I could keep the remaining product to use it more. The faces did what they promised to do, which is hydrate, brighten and moisturize. It says to keep it on for 15 minutes, but I always left it for 30 because of greed! Haha! Not even! Sometimes I left it for longer, because I would go on about my day and forget it was there. It never fell down. When I took the sheet off, my face always felt plump and super hydrated, which made it easier for me to apply my tinted SPF and not looks like a cracker.

The Benton masks on the other hand were not my favorite…and I have tried plenty, but these definitely did not make on the “to repurchase” list. First of all, it’s obviously super sticky, because there’s snail  secretion in there. I thought it wouldn’t bother me, oh! but it does. I could not stand how sticky it was on my face. The consistency bother me some much, that I never gave them a chance. Every time I would put one of these on my face, 5  mins in, I would remove it and throw it out. It was weird on the face, it was sticky but did not stick. I always felt the sheet rubbing around and I needed to stick it every 2 seconds because it came off. I know it sounds weird, but it was drying more that hydrating for me. I felt itchy and just did not like it at all. The serum that was left in there, I used, but still did nothing for me. Maybe it wasn’t a type of product that worked for me. That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t work for you out there. We’re all different and our skin is different. So what doesn’t work for me might work better for you and vice versa.

Final verdict, if you have sensitive skin like me (prone to breaking out when trying new products), I would recommend the Face Shop masks because you get your money’s worth. I did not like the Benton masks and I will not repurchase them anytime soon.

My go-to masks…

I’ve got about 99 masks I use, but 2 of my favorites are then ones I will talk about below. They don’t hurt my eczema-prone skin. Of course, I have always patch test with loads of products, since I sometimes ended up with burns..not fun when you have an event the next day this happens.

The reason why I take the time to always pamper y skin and take care of it is because I do not wear foundation and will not wear foundation because it is not really necessary to hide what we have. I understand makeup is a means of being artistic and expressing thyself. However, for me, I like to feel as natural as possible and let my skin breath. I’m a lipstick addict and that you’ll catch me wearing a ton…even on my teeth!

In order to have beautiful skin, it is imperative to take the necessary steps to get there. –I will write up a blog post soon about what I do to have healthy glowing skin- And masks for me are a ways to help maintaining healthier skin. These are the 2 masks I swear by:

1) Peter Thomas Roth-Pumpkin Enzyme Mask (72$ CAD)

Looking at how  much I spent on this mask makes me wants to gag. It’s expensive but trust me guys, this works wonders. I mean I would never spend money on just voidness. But this purchase is justifiable because it really works. It’s a potent mask that helps exfoliate the skin gently with pumpkin enzymes and AHA acids. It literally saves the skin when it’s revolting and starting up a war of zits and pimples (yes I am talking about that dreadful time of the month). I will have to say that at first this tingles for a minute or two but then it subsides. I usually leave it on for like 10-15 minutes then wash it off and my skin just looks healthy and less spotty. My skin looks smoother and radiant and the texture improves quite a lot. You have to be careful though using this, because it could irritate sensitive skin if left on for too too long. Don’t exfoliate before using this because this already does the job. Also, a little goes a long way, I have had this product for about 4 months now and I still have loads left.

2) Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay (18$ CAD)

You get so much product in this tub!!! For 18$ CAD you get 1 lb of product. And it lasts like forever. I have had this for almost a year and I haven’t even gotten to half the product. Basically, it’s powder that you can mix with water or apple cider vinegar, which then turns into clay. I prefer mixing it with apple cider vinegar because I feel it works better for me that way. It is recommended to apply for 10-15 minutes onto sensitive skin or 25 minutes to normal skin. I apply it and sometimes forget it’s there…even though can’t really forget it because it hardens. I usually like to bubble bath and have this on, like that with the heat vapors it stiffens less and I have an easier time removing it. This mask, no joke, removes every piece of gunk on your face, it deep cleans your pores that when you remove it, you’re seriously squeaky clean!!! Like baby bum shiny clean and smooth. I stay a little red after using it sometimes, but that’s because I leave a bit more than 15 mins and for sensitive skin, it is recommended not to.

If I had to choose between all my masks, these 2 definitely take the top prize. They give me results and they help keep my skin healthy and glowy.

If you’re looking into buying some potent masks that give instant results, I suggest you guys to look into these.

Hope this post helped!

Cheers x

Estee Lauder powerfoil mask.

I am a total mask junkie…true story!!! and my family is annoyed with me because I constantly have something on my face…can’t help it! I find this the perfect way to de-stress and feel refreshed. So I have a couple that I use and am in love with but I came across this one a while ago and bought the 4 pack one from the Sephora website. I love the way my skin feels after using the Estee Lauder Advanced Repair Concentrated Recovery Powerfoil mask. This is one pricey little sucker. Super expensive but super worth it. I use this once every 2 weeks or so, or whenever my skin needs a little pick me up. This mask is a great way to prep your skin for an important event and get a healthy glow without paying the price of a facial.

sheet mask.png

The mask itself is like a cloth material on the inside with foil on the outside (to maintain all the goodness locked in place). It’s very easy to put on your face and stays put once placed on the skin. You have to put the bottom layer first and then put the top one… then you leave this on for 10 minutes (as per directions), but I cheat and leave it on for 20.
It looks a little scary, like Jason X Friday the 13th scary…but the results are remarkable!!! The first time I used it; it took away the redness and made my skin so soft and toned. I have sensitive skin and break out easily, but I didn’t have any problems with this mask and I even noticed my dark eye circles were a little bit lighter after use.
It sells for 25$ CAD for one mask for 88$ CAD for 4 and that’s the only downside really. It’s expensive, but there’s so much product left in there that you can keep using it as a serum a couple of days after. I usually apply the rest of the liquid on my neck and shoulders…the rest of your body needs love too!
I will definitely be a repeat buyer of this mask because it does the job and delivers its promise of giving you youthful radiant skin.
If you’re looking for a good pick me up mask that will give you radiant skin, then this is worth a try.
Hope this little mini review helped!
Until next time,
Cheers x

My dermapen experience!

So I have been in dire need of a facial..but one that would help reduce my scars (after a severe allergic breakout/naughty phase). I also needed a facial to give me luminosity but in a kind and gentle way. Since my skin is now super sensitive and I suffer from contact dermatitis, I have to be really careful with what I do with my face. This is when Linda came to the rescue! She is a wonderful esthetician and a great friend. I started doing hair laser removal with her and that’s when she noticed my skin getting from good to bad to worst. She suggested I take care of my skin with cleansers and gels, but also suggested I start needling (a.k.a dermapen treatment).

Linda’s info if you are in the Montreal/Laval region. You can follow her on facebook or instagram @megalash

I was super curious to know what this was all about. When she explained and showed it to me, I kinda really panicked. The thought of having needles stab my face constantly for about an hour was not so promising nor exciting! I was totally against the idea but when my face was becoming really bad, I couldn’t help but think…what’s the worst thing that could happen?!

That’s when I booked an appointment and went for it. For those who are unaware of what dermapen is…here’s a tiny summary:
Needling is a technology that uses multiple needles (a disposable head) that vertically pierces the skin with a vibration function. This lightly punctures the skin (sounds painfullllll!!!) while moving across the skin’s surface and thus stimulates natural collagen reproduction. Along with other different benefits, this process helps and increases the absorption of active ingredients into the skin. So basically the dermapen technology creates stimulated repair and faster resurfacing results without any major downtime. There are different levels to the needle penetration depending on pain tolerance. You can also prep the skin with numbing cream. I usually go in there without any numbing cream..I mean it hurts but it’s tolerable (for me anyway).

This is what my face looked a few weeks before my treatments and so far I have had 3-4 treatments a few weeks apart:

This is the only photo I found that actually showed my scars on my cheek and some minor breakouts on my forehead. (PS: This photo is not retouched)

I took pictures right before the session, during and right after…here they are:

This is before I got anything done and after 2 sessions and my continuous use of my Skinceuticals’ range.

IMG_4655
After cleansing, a layer of collagen is slathered on the face to help the pen glide better and help boost the skin’s healing process. (obviously I’m excited…NOT!)
IMG_4656
Disgusting I know and not nearly as glamorous as Kim Kardashian’s vampire facelift. But this is what it looks like during the dermapen treatment.
IMG_4658
Right after wiping the blood of and hydrating the skin. It looks red and irritated but it calms down after a few minutes…promise!

Want to know what it feels like right after needling?!?!  Well, it felt like I had a bad sunburn. It felt tight and I looked red. But it wasn’t bad at all. Afterwards, you can’t wear makeup for at least 24 hours and should be gentle to your skin for several days after the treatment.

**PS: Each session costs between 100-150$ depending on your esthetician.**

To sum it all up, this is what dermapen helps you with:

-Refining pores
-Reducing scars
-Collagen induction
-Firming skin
-Reducing fine line
-Even helps reduce stretch marks

The last photo is to show you what the face looks like a day after having the treatment. Now, what’s really important after the dermapen treatment is hydrating your skin with a good and deep moisturizer. It is crucial to let you skin heel on its own and not pick at dead skin. The skin will definitely flake!!! But it doesn’t matter!! It’s part of the regenerating stage. Also, for maximum and positive results, try to avoid putting makeup a week after the session (at least). Like that, you let your skin breath and take in all the goodness without pressuring it or damaging it further more. It is okay if you have scars nor perfect skin!! The road to achieving that is it to take the time and be patient. Give your skin the necessary time to get better on its own.

Hope this detailed post helps you in any way possible and please remember that what is good for me might not be good for the rest. So take the time to do your research and learn about what’s good for you and your skin. Find a good practitioner or esthetician you trust before you decide to go through with this treatment.

Sensitive skincare

For the past couple of months I have been struggling to find the perfect skincare routine due to my newly diagnosed skin condition (contact dermatitis). For those of you who do not really know contact dermatitis, briefly, it’s a skin condition caused by the inflammation of the skin. Dermatitis is caused by the skin reacting to allergens or irritants and it is usually characterized by red, itchy skin that can become blistered and sensitive. My skin swells badly and crusts up, which creates scar afterwards. Sucks big time, I know, but thankfully I am so not into layering loads of foundation and makeup on my skin (feeling bothers me and also because I think less is more…but that’s just me).
My sensitive skin doesn’t love products very easily; it’s super stubborn, dries out fast, gets super itchy and sometimes breaks out. So I have been in the hunt for something that will hydrate my skin and keep breakouts at bay. After spending so much money on different skincare products, I came across the Skinceuticals range. Now, everybody’s skin is different and what works for me might not work for the rest. But what I really love about the Skinceuticals range is the work behind it. There is a wide network of dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and aestheticians who are specially trained to create the ideal skincare regimen that can help prevent accelerated skin aging and sun damage. They mainly focus on protecting the skin, correcting existing issues and preventing future damage. Prevention, Protection, and Correction!!!
IMG_0207
Since my skin has been quite naughty lately, I have had to change a couple of creams/cleansers around because some dried me out, some burned my skin and some made me breakout (HARD). I have specific products for eczema prone skin but I needed some serums to hydrate my skin further. So obviously because of my issues, when I came across this brand, I was hesitant to try it, because it was expensive and I didn’t know what to expect..but then I figure what the hell..let me give it a go.
So depending on what I needed to correct and recommendations and reviews I saw online, I took a plunge and bought the Phloretin CF Serum. This is a daytime antioxidant serum that delivers advanced environmental protection and diminishes the appearance of discoloration. This serum is part of the prevent range and even though it is under the anti-aging section, I figured I can start the prevention plan now and since I have a few spots and scars from breaking out, I decided to give it a try. 1 week in using this product, I noticed a huge difference with my skin tone; my skin color was more unified and less spotty.  A month later, I get compliments on how my skin glows!! My severe eczema is at bay, my skin is hydrated, I have fewer spots popping (that time of the month..ugghhh) and my scars are slowly starting to fade.

Since noticing change in my skin, I decided to invest in more bits and bobs from this brand. For the naughty days, I invested in LHA Cleansing Geland the LHA Solution Toner. I cleanse, tone and then follow up with these babies: the Retexturing Activator and then finish up with the Blemish + Age Defense Serum. I use these mainly when my face is feeling dull, especially when Aunty Em hits town. I am super happy investing in these products because they help me keep my skin under control and mostly importantly hydrate it (because I am super prone to scaling and peeling). These products are part of the correct range and they help fight breakouts and improve the appearance of blemishes. These serums help maintain excess oil stable while exfoliating dead skin cells to prevent clogged pores for an overall improved skin appearance. You have to be careful of not overusing this because it does dry out a little, so this is why I only use this at night after putting on moisturizer.
I know that these products are super expensive but they are well worth every penny. I am happy with my skin routine and will keep using these products for as long as I can and as long as my skin loves them too. Since I hate wearing any sort of foundation, I try to keep my skin happy, healthy and clear, therefore a proper skincare regimen is super essential for me to accomplish all that and more. And because the SkinCeuticals’ philosophy is built on principals that address and minimize the visible effects that environmental aggressors have on skin, I like to invest in them. And I have also noticed that my skin glows..total bonus <3
blogphoto.jpg
So this is my skin now without foundation or editing..excuse the bags under my eyes and the white-haired brow X)
Since my skin went through hell and back (got burned a couple of times, did a major chemical peel, allergic reactions…and now dermatitis), I am now more careful with what I put on my face. What works for me, might not work for other skin types, but I hope that with my sharing this post, some of you can benefit from it.
Cheers xo
