So, turns out cardigans are back in style people! It was a big trend back in 2007-2008 and I was so into it back then. I had cardigans in every colorway possible. I remember buying mine from Zara for the whooping of 19.99$. I wore cardigans so much that after a while, I got over them. But now, not only are they back but they are back in a granny chic way. Towards the end of 2019, the runways were filled with granny cardis…from Gucci to Miu Miu to Molly Goddard—the trend is huge! Different colors and patterns and looks. It’s amazing. In fashion, anyway, history repeats itself and if you invest in key pieces and keep them in your closet for the future, you will make use of them again and again. Tbh, I am not mad at it, because that’s when thrifting and vintage come in to play. I assure you, that if you take the time to look in your local thrift shop, you will find an amazing cardigan sitting there waiting to be loved. I have a couple that I adore and cannot part ways with. I also know that I can raid my mom’s closet at any time and make any look granny chic. This brings me to my next point; granny chic is a thing!!! And I adore and applaud the major fashion houses for adopting this idea. Because oversized doesn’t mean not sexy. It’s almost like freedom from the tight, short clothes that we are all accustomed to seeing. Oversized can be sexy! I promise. You just have to learn to style it and make it for work for your body shape. So, it turns out I am already nailing this trend. I don’t know what’s wrong with me lately, but I am into the granny look, but obviously, I like to make it fashion. My current fashion icon is the pigeon lady from Home Alone 2. She’s got the oversized, color-blocked looked down! I love her!
I am known to color clash quite a lot and today was no different. I opted for a vintage Parisian cardigan my mom had bought for herself in a thrift shop (duh! I stole it!) and I love this look. I can wear this over and over. anyone who sees this cardigan wants it, but I feel like selling it would be such a loss…I don’t think I would overcome it. So, I keep it neatly tucked away into my wardrobe and bring it out occasionally to satisfy my little vintage soul.
And look goes like this:
I love the mixture of the Parisian art deco of the cardi with the floral of the skirt. I feel like the patterns marry perfectly together. But then again, that’s just me. I know that color clashing and print clashing can be crazy at times but the colors in this go well together that it’s not overly out there.
Time and time again, I say that vintage/thrifting is a good way to find pieces that will nourish your trend following needs. Especially if you’re an avid trend follower. There’s no need to splurge on pieces that you might never wear again unless you are certain to make use of said items in the future. Or you can always opt to buy second-hand designer items.
You can nail the granny look by adding a cardigan over your outfit as I did here, or you can accessories with pearls and jewels. You can wear cute cocktail dresses or sport vintage top handle bags (which is quite in too). There are a million and one ways to make the granny look work for you; it can make it playful, fun and sexy. Know your body and know how to make things work for you. Or you can always do like me and follow pigeon lady!
